Defeats came at the hands of the host Greyhounds and Truman, two teams ranked among the top 25 nationally. The Warriors faced a third ranked squad Tuesday, opening GLIAC play with a 3-0 loss at #24 Hillsdale.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) has guided the team offensively with 58 kills and 33 blocks in the first five matches. She was selected to the University of Indianapolis Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.64 kills and 2.14 blocks per set. She also had a .263 hitting percentage and contributed five service aces last weekend. Sak tied for team-high honors with seven kills and had a career-best four service aces Tuesday against the Chargers.

Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) has 145 assists, and Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) is averaging 4.06 digs per set in her first season as the starting libero.

Standouts among Wayne State’s seven freshmen are Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich), who has 39 kills and 10 blocks, and Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) with 27 kills and 13 blocks.

GLIAC newcomer Lake Erie is 3-2 this season, winning two of its four matches at the D&E Senator Spikefest in Elkins, W. Va. last weekend as well as a five-set victory Tuesday at Notre Dame (Ohio).

The Storm has 15 players returning including five starters from its 2009 squad which finished with a 10-27 record. Sophomore Mary Walter, coming off a productive 2009 season during which she led the team with 264 kills, has amassed 42 in five matches this season, second on the team to freshman Jamie Hoppe who has 45 kills along with 50 digs. The Storm’s top blocker is freshman Liz Whiddon, who is averaging 1.10 blocks per set.

Saturday night will be the first meeting between Wayne State and Ashland since the Eagles knocked the Warriors out of the GLIAC Tournament a year ago at Kates Gymnasium. Among the eight returning letterwinners is Brittany Snider, who earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors after totaling 504 kills, 295 digs and 26 aces last season. Snider averaged 5.43 kills per set as the Eagles went 3-1 at the Vulcan Classic in Hilo, Hawaii last weekend.
