Sak Named AVCA All-American

Wayne State University sophomore middle blocker Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) capped off her successful 2010 season by being selected as an Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the organization announced Monday evening.

Already the recipient of two All-Midwest Region honors, Sak was also a First Team All-GLIAC selection this fall.  She is the fourth volleyball All-American in school history, joining Sarha Gosselin (2008), Elisa Joris (2005) and Rachel Parham (1987).

Sak finished the season with 401 kills and became the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330. Her 59 service aces were also the most since 1992.

She was a key contributor to Wayne State finishing in second place (15-12, 13-6 GLIAC) in the South Division and ending the regular season on a six-match winning streak. The Warriors qualified for the postseason for the third straight year and earned home-court advantage for the first round.

Volleyball Hosts Ferris State Thursday In GLIAC Quarterfinal

LIVE STATS  |  ALL-ACCESS  |  TOURNAMENT HOME PAGE

GLIAC TOURNAMENT
The fourth-seeded Wayne State Warriors will host the fifth-seeded Ferris State Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Matthaei.

Wayne State finished the regular season in second place in the GLIAC South Division.  Ferris State placed third in the North Division and, with both teams posting a 13-6 conference record, WSU earned the right to host FSU by way of a head-to-head tiebreaker.

WEEK IN REVIEW
Wayne State ended the regular season on a six-match winning streak. The Warriors defeated Findlay in five sets last Tuesday before shutting out Michigan Tech on Friday and earning a monumental 3-1 triumph Saturday over #19 Northern Michigan. Wayne State, which had lost 26 consecutive meetings to NMU, defeated the Wildcats for the first time since September 1990.

Katarzyna Sak was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week for the third time this season. She averaged five kills per set and exceeded the 20-kill mark twice, matching her career-high with 23 against the Oilers and totaling 21 versus the Wildcats. Sak hit .609 on Saturday against Michigan Tech and .410 for the week, and racked up 15 service aces as well as nine blocks in the three victories. She had six aces Saturday, most by a Warrior since 2004.

Cydney Biessel averaged 11.50 assists, Lindsey Graciak amassed 62 digs, and Maureen MacDonald had 30 kills as well as 27 digs.

WSU’s 13 conference wins are the most since the 1998 squad went 15-4.

SCOUTING FERRIS STATE
Wayne State battled to a five-set victory on Sept. 25 at the Matthaei to defeat Ferris State for the first time since 1998. Since that meeting, the Bulldogs are 11-4 and come in - much like Wayne State - riding the momentum of a six-match winning streak.

Three of FSU’s last four victories have been shutouts, including last Wednesday against Saginaw Valley State and Friday versus Lake Superior State.

Senior middle hitter Arielle Goodson, who had 20 kills and hit .452 Friday against the Lakers, ranks second in the GLIAC in kills (4.13 per set). Sophomore setter Samantha Fordyce and junior libero Lisa Tobiczyk respectively average 10.17 assists and 4.38 digs, both figures ranking fourth in the conference.

POSTSEASON HISTORY
Wayne State is playing in its third consecutive GLIAC Tournament, having qualified in every year of head coach Phil Nickel’s tenure. Thursday will be the second time in three years that WSU has hosted the first round, as the Warriors defeated Hillsdale at the Matthaei in the opening round in 2008. Last season, Wayne State was ousted by Ashland, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. In total, WSU has qualified for the GLIAC Volleyball Tournament seven times prior to 2010. Wayne State made four straight trips from 1996-99 and another in 2005.

The last time Wayne State and Ferris State met in postseason play resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Bulldogs at the 1987 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional in Big Rapids.

AT THE HELM
Nickel is in his third season as Wayne State’s head volleyball coach and has a record of 51-32. In his five-year career, which includes two seasons at Thomas More College, Nickel is 85-75. Tia Brandel-Wilhelm is in her 15th season at FSU with a record of 305-159, and is 423-179 overall in 18 years. She earned her 300th victory at Ferris State on Oct. 24 as the Bulldogs defeated Michigan Tech, 3-1.

Warriors Defeat NMU For First Time Since 1990

DETROIT - In its regular-season finale, the Wayne State University volleyball team (15-11, 13-6 GLIAC) snapped a 26-match losing streak against 19th-ranked Northern Michigan University (20-5, 14-4 GLIAC) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

Scores were 25-22, 25-17, 26-28, 25-23 as Wayne State closed out the regular campaign on a six-match winning streak. The Warriors, who had not defeated NMU since September 1990, also clinched home-court advantage in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament on Thursday.

As Wayne State celebrated Senior Day, Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) totaled six kills and 12 digs, while Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) racked up eight digs and a pair of service aces.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) led all players with 21 kills, her fourth 20-plus kill performance of the season. She also had three b locks and six service aces, two shy of the school record and the most by a Warrior since Kerri Royer had six aces on Sept. 17, 2004 against Gannon.

Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) had 11 kills and eight digs, Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) amassed 45 assists, and Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) posted 20 digs.

Northern Michigan jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set, but Wayne State chipped away and tied it at 10-10. The Warriors took a 15-14 advantage and led the rest of the way to a 25-22 result.

After winning the second set, 25-17, the Warriors fought off three set points in the third before the Wildcats sealed it 28-26. Kent and Sak combined for 13 kills.

Wayne State led by as many as five early in the fourth until NMU tied it at 16-16. A battle ensued with WSU getting the edge, 25-23.

The Warriors will host Ferris State in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

NOTES
Sak has 57 service aces this season, and became the first WSU player to exceed 50 aces in a season since Alison Soethe (52) in 1997 … Biessel is averaging 10.42 assists per set this season, fourth-best in school history … Wayne State’s 13 conference wins are the most since the 1998 squad went 15-4.

Volleyball Clinches Tourney Spot With 3-2 Win Over Findlay

DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (13-11, 11-6 GLIAC) clinched a berth in the conference tournament for the third straight season following Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over the University of Findlay (12-14, 6-11 GLIAC) at the Matthaei.

The Warriors battled back from a 2-1 deficit (23-25, 25-10, 28-30) to take the final two sets (25-20, 15-11) and win their fourth straight match. Wayne State has won the last six meetings against Findlay, including three five-set results.

Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) finished with 23 kills, matching the career-high she established Oct. 22 against Tiffin. She hit .333, made three blocks and had four service aces.

Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) and Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) each posted double-doubles, the fifth of the season for both Warriors. MacDonald collected 14 kills and 12 digs, while Kent racked up 13 kills and 13 digs. Kent also had two aces and a pair of blocks.

Cydney Biessel’s (Ruby, Mich./Yale) 61 assists were the most by a WSU player since Rebecca Hague had 61 at Lake Superior State on Oct. 10, 2003. Biessel also had five digs and three blocks.

In the opening set, the Oilers erased a 20-15 deficit with a 10-3 run. Findlay out-hit WSU, .345 to .200, and took a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors turned the tide in the second, hitting .364 to UF’s .000 mark. Sak had five kills as Wayne State cruised to a 25-10 win.

While the two sides were never separated by more than three points in the third set, Wayne State trailed for the majority of the set as Findlay served to take a 2-1 lead at 24-21. The Warriors fought back with a four-point run to pull ahead 25-24, but the Oilers were finally able to finish it off 30-28.

Wayne State led for the duration of the fourth, and in the fifth WSU clinched the match with a 15-11 triumph.

Others contributing up front were Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) who had nine kills, Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) who hit .556 with six kills and three blocks, and Kris Vulaj (Redford, Mich./Union) who finished with five kills. Defensively, Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) led all players with 25 digs.

Wayne State will close out the regular season this weekend, hosting Michigan Tech on Friday and Northern Michigan on Saturday.

Volleyball Faces Two Ohio Foes This Weekend

The Wayne State University volleyball team heads down to Ohio this weekend to take on Tiffin University on Saturday night and Ohio Dominican University on Sunday afternoon.

Live stats will be available from both Tiffin and Ohio Dominican. Fans can also watch Saturday’s match against the Dragons on B2 Networks.

WEEK IN REVIEW
After being shut out at No. 24 Hillsdale to open conference play Sept. 7, Wayne State split a pair of three-set matches in its first home weekend of the season, defeating Lake Erie last Friday and losing to Ashland the following night.

The Warriors out-hit the Storm, .293 to -.145, in Friday’s victory which took just one hour to complete. Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) had 15 kills, four more than the entire Lake Erie squad. Sak made just one attack error and hit .778, the highest single-match winning percentage in at least a decade.

Saturday’s match was closely contested, as neither WSU nor Ashland led by more than five points. Sak finished with a career-high 16 kills as well as four blocks. Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) finished with 10 kills and a team-best .444 hitting percentage, while Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) had six kills as well as nine digs.

SCOUTING TIFFIN
The Dragons, who went 4-29 overall a year ago and did not win a conference match, have started 3-0 in GLIAC play this season and 5-2 overall under new head coach Dana Cordova. After earning victories over Northwood and Lake Superior State last weekend, Tiffin shut out Findlay on Wednesday and is tied with Hillsdale for first place in the South Division.

Tiffin is led up front by Brittany Teaford and Brooke Bernabei, who came into this week ranked sixth in the conference in hitting percentage (.340) and kills (3.77/set), respectively. Libero Lindsay Heller (5.18 digs/set) guides a Tiffin defense which ranks second in the league.

After the Dragons and Chargers meet on Friday, the Warriors will step into the Gillmor Center as Tiffin’s fifth straight home opponent. Wayne State won all five prior meetings with Tiffin, including four shutouts, dating back to 1997.

SCOUTING OHIO DOMINICAN
The Panthers, newcomers to the GLIAC in 2010, come into this weekend looking for their first conference victory of the year. ODU will host Findlay on Friday and Hillsdale on Saturday before the Warriors arrive in Columbus for Sunday’s encounter.

Ohio Dominican’s top hitter is Rachel Billing, who came into the week ranked seventh with a 3.75 kills/set average. Billing will enter Friday’s match against the Oilers needing just two kills to reach 1,000 for her career. Stacy Rogg leads the GLIAC in digs (6.50/set).

She was selected to the University of Indianapolis Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.64 kills and 2.14 blocks per set. Volleyball Selects 2010 Captains

Wayne State University head volleyball coach Phil Nickel has announced that three captains have been selected to lead the 2010 squad.  Senior Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian), in her second straight season as a captain, will be joined by sophomores Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) and Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino).

MacDonald, one of three seniors on the team, will return to the outside hitter position after spending a year at the libero spot. The two-year captain played in every match last season and finished ninth in the GLIAC in digs per set (3.35).

Biessel became WSU's starting setter as a freshman last year and totaled 1,015 assists, 13th-most in school history. She finished fifth in the conference in assists per set (9.58) while contributing 21 service aces, second-most on the team, as well as 170 digs, 51 kills and 45 blocks.

Sak is Wayne State’s top returning net player who finished third in the GLIAC with a .305 hitting percentage, tied for 10th-best in school history. An All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, Sak was one of only two freshmen to receive all-conference accolades in 2009.

Wayne State will open the 2010 season this weekend at the University of Indianapolis Invitational.

WAYNE STATE SEASON PREVIEW

When Phil Nickel arrived at Wayne State to take over the volleyball program in March 2008, he set out to instill a winning attitude in his student-athletes. As Nickel enters his third season at the helm, it appears that attitude has taken effect.

“Even though we went 19-9 last year and went to the GLIAC Tournament for the second year in a row, there was a sense of disappointment that we didn’t do a little better, so I think that says a lot about the expectations within the program,” said Nickel.

The Warriors return seven letterwinners from a 2009 squad which recorded the highest win total since 1998 and the best winning percentage since 1997.

“We were really excited with the year we had,” said Nickel. “It’s a testament to where the program has come in the two years we’ve been here and the direction we’re heading.”

However, to get Wayne State back to the postseason in 2010, Nickel will have to do so with a roster comprised almost entirely of underclassmen, as 11 of his 14 student-athletes are either freshmen or sophomores.

Nickel is prepared to deal with some of the growing pains and inconsistencies common with young teams, but nonetheless likes the potential in his squad and feels that, “we have a lot of talent - probably the most depth in talent we’ve had in the two years I’ve been here.”

Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian), one of three seniors on the team, will return to the outside hitter position after spending a year at the libero spot. The two-year captain played in every match last season and finished ninth in the GLIAC in digs per set (3.35).

“We expect a lot of leadership from Mo,” said Nickel. “She provides a lot of energy and emotion, and a great positive attitude all the time.”

Setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.), who enters her senior season ranked sixth all-time at WSU in career assists (1,952) and assists per set (9.34), and middle blocker Mariel VanOverbeke (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) make up the remainder of the veteran corps.

Critical to the success of the 2010 Warriors will be the play of their sophomore class. Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) came on the scene as the starting setter last year and totaled 1,015 assists, 13th-most in school history. She finished fifth in the conference in assists per set (9.58) while contributing 21 service aces, second-most on the team, as well as 170 digs, 51 kills and 45 blocks.

“Cydney did a great job last year. As a coaching staff we talked about how hard it was for her to come in as a freshman and take over the setting position when you had five seniors on the team. I think that’s asking a lot, but she did a great job.”

Biessel facilitated an offense which ranked second only to Hillsdale last season in hitting percentage. Factoring significantly into WSU’s front row proficiency in 2009 was Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino), Wayne State’s top returning net player who finished third in the GLIAC with a .305 hitting percentage, tied for 10th-best in school history. An All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, Sak was one of only two freshmen to receive all-conference accolades in 2009.

“Kate had a tremendous spring. She’s really blossomed into a tremendous player,” said Nickel. “She’ll need to pick up some slack from a kills perspective of the seniors who graduated last year. We expect her to maintain a good hitting percentage and be an offensive leader on this team.”

After an impressive high school career, Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) will be looking to reach her full potential as she enters her second collegiate season. Kent ranked 18th in the GLIAC in blocks per set (0.64) and collected 64 kills as a freshman.

Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) is projected to be the starting libero in 2010. She totaled 103 digs in 74 sets last year and finished fourth on the team with 17 service aces.

Seven rookies round out this year’s roster, and many of these freshmen will fill the gaps left up front by last season’s senior class.

“I think they all have the potential to contribute right away,” said Nickel.

Middle hitter Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) played three years on the varsity volleyball team and was a significant contributor on the state runner-up squad in 2009. She was a two-time first team all-conference and all-area selection, earned all-state honors twice, and served as team captain for two years.

Outside hitter Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) was an all-star and MVP at Sandwich Secondary, and was named most dedicated. A 6-1 athlete with a diversified background, she also participated in basketball, track and field, and badminton, and was a silver medalist in both badminton and the high jump.

Jessica DeLeeuw (Harrison Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse) was an all-state selection her senior season and was named MVP of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division. The 5-7 setter and two-year team captain was a two-time all-region and a three-time all-city honoree.

Despite missing her senior season due to an injury, Jen Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich./Saline) was a two-time all-conference and offensive player of the year selection. The 5-11 middle blocker led the 2008 squad in hitting and blocking as Saline went 45-15-2.

Ava Frakes (Dearborn, Mich.), a 5-7 defensive specialist, helped Dearborn win a district title and reach the regional finals in 2008 and 2009. She claimed all-city accolades as well as all-conference and all-region honorable mention.

Middle blocker Kris Vulaj (Redford, Mich./Union) was a two-time all-conference selection for the Union Panthers. She served as team captain her senior year and was a 2008 scholar athlete. She also played AAU volleyball, training with Instant Replay volleyball club for two years.

Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) is a 6-1 middle blocker who led the Riverdale Falcons to consecutive first-place finishes in 2007 and 2008, and second place in 2009. She was a two-time all-conference honoree and a 2009 second team all-district selection, having set single-season school records in 2009 for aces and blocks, as well as the career aces record.

The Warriors will begin their 36th season of volleyball Sept. 3-4 at an invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Of Wayne State’s 17 scheduled opponents, nine qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Warriors will be tested immediately, as they open with a match Sept. 3 against Indianapolis. The Greyhounds went 38-2 last year and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, where they lost to the eventual undefeated national champion Concordia-St. Paul.

Wayne State will also meet Tusculum and Truman State, two NCAA regional qualifiers in 2009, as well as West Virginia State before opening its GLIAC schedule Sept. 7 at Hillsdale.

“It will be a really good test for us the very first weekend and hopefully will help prepare us for GLIAC play,” said Nickel.

The Warriors will play their first home matches at the Matthaei on Sept. 10 against Lake Erie, which is joining the GLIAC this season after transitioning from NCAA Division III, and Sept. 11 versus Ashland.

The schedule includes three Sunday matches, beginning with a Sept. 19 matchup at Ohio Dominican, another new GLIAC member in 2010 and formerly a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Panthers will come to Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 24. Wayne State’s other Sunday match is Sept. 26 as WSU hosts Grand Valley State.

The third annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover will be held Oct. 15-16, at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Following the Crossover, five of WSU’s seven remaining matches will be played at the Matthaei, leading into the 2010 GLIAC Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 11.

With six GLIAC teams qualifying for the NCAA Regional tournament last year, Nickel feels that another strong season for his Warriors can put them in position for a postseason berth. Clearly the expectations are higher, but so is the potential for success.

Preseason Update

Wow!  Just finished a great practice.  We're starting to focus on preparing for the season.  We'll look at some different line-ups tomorrow during our scrimmage with Madonna.  Madonna is one of the top NAIA programs in the Midwest, and will be a good test for us.  We're making a lot of progress in a number of areas, but it will be great to play someone else so we can evaluate our progress a little better.

The team has come together really well.  Katy Westenberg and Maureen MacDonald have done a great job of welcoming all of the new players to the team and teaching everyone the Wayne State way.  We have eleven days until our first official match, so it will be important to keep teaching as we prepare for our tournament at the University of Indianapolis on September 3-4.

Team Building

We took the morning off from practice to go to the Mort Harris Rec Center on campus for some team building activities.  The girls did a number of exercises to get to know each other better and improve their communication and teamwork.  The second part of the session included rock climbing and learning to belay.  Everyone had fun and learned some valuable lessons that we can carry over to the volleyball court.

Work in Progress

After 5 practices, we're excited about the progress we've made in skills.  We've spent a lot of time on ball handling and serve receive, which is always a key component for any team.  We continue to improve, but will keep working to raise the level of our service reception.  The defense, on the other hand, is ahead of expectations for this time of year, as is the blocking.  We hit last night for the first time, and we saw a marked improvement from last night to this morning.  As the hitters and setters continue to work together, we should continue to see a definite incline in the level of our hitting.

Tomorrow morning, we will head over to the Rec Center for some team building on the high ropes course.  It should be a lot of fun and a nice break for the girls.  Hopefully, we'll have some pictures of that tomorrow.

Going Camping

The 2010 Wayne State Volleyball preseason training camp is under way.  With two practices on Monday, the Warriors focused a lot on fundamentals the first day.  We spent a lot of time on movement and platform skills, which will improve our passing as we move forward.  Today, we will continue to focus on the individual skills during the morning practice and will start to look at some more team oriented things this evening.

Wayne State Athletics Records Second Best National Finish Ever

The Wayne State University athletics program placed 21st place in the final 2009-10 NCAA Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings released this week by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).  This is the second-highest finish in school history (WSU was 11th in 2008-09).

"The summer 'break' is more satisfying when you consider our final national ranking," stated WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier.  "Since the national ranking reflects overall competitive success, our 21st in the country finish is a credit to the hard work of student-athletes, coaches and staff.  And when considered with our academic achievement of 61 percent of student-athletes above a 3.00 and 7,555 hours of community service last year, those same individuals can feel good about how they represented Wayne State University."

After garnering 220 points from winter sports (90 from women's swimming/diving, 85 men's swimming/diving, and 45 from men's and women's fencing), the five Warrior spring sports squads combined for 234.5 points as all five teams qualified for NCAA post-season play in the same year for the first time in school history.

Softball led the way with a seventh place national finish (73 points), while men's golf earned 61.5 points by virtue of its 14th place finish at the national championship.  Women's tennis accumulated 50 points after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament (17th place national finish).  Both the baseball and men's tennis squads tallied 25 points.

The 454.5 total points for WSU is the second-highest mark in school history, trailing only the 2008-09 total of 499 points.

Wayne State has had its top nine all-time NACDA finishes in the last nine seasons, including six years of the last seven in the top 10 percent of Division II.

Volleyball Inks Two More For 2010

Wayne State University head volleyball coach Phil Nickel has announced that two additional prospective student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at WSU in the fall and join the volleyball program, bringing Nickel’s recruiting class to a total of six.

Harrison Township native and L’Anse Creuse graduate Jessica DeLeeuw was a four-year letterwinner for the Lancers. She was an all-state selection her senior season and was named MVP of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division. The 5-7 setter was a two-time all-region and a three-time all-city honoree. DeLeeuw, a two-year team captain, also received academic all-state honors in 2009-10 and graduated as the valedictorian of L’Anse Creuse this past spring.

Jen Finkbeiner, a 5-11 middle blocker from Saline, played four years of varsity volleyball for the Hornets and, despite missing her senior season due to an injury, was a two-time all-conference and offensive player of the year selection. She led the 2008 squad in hitting and blocking as Saline went 45-15-2. Finkbeiner, who also played basketball as a freshman, was on the honor roll at Saline and graduated with honors.

“We are excited to add two more players to our 2010 recruiting class,” said Nickel. “Jess and Jen are both great players and great people who are going to add a great deal to our program.”

DeLeeuw and Finkbeiner will join fall signees Nicole Arends, Kristen Bulkiewicz, Kris Vulaj and Amanda Wetherill as the Warriors begin the 2010 season September 3-4 in Indianapolis.

A BIG Congratulations to the Wayne State Softball Team

Warriors Earn Trip To College World Series With 7-1 Win
WSU to make second World Series Appearance in school history.
DETROIT -- The seventh-ranked Wayne State University (52-11 overall) advanced to the Division II College World Series with a 7-1 triumph over visiting Ashland University (36-13 overall) in the second game of the best two-of-three Midwest Super Regional at the WSU Softball Stadium.

WSU will play at 6 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, May 27 vs. Hawaii Pacific.

The Warriors were the visiting in the tournament format which has the higher seed home for game No. 1, with the lower seed serving as home team in game No. 2.

Junior Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) led off the top of the third with a walk.  Pinch-runner Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).  On a 3-1 offering from AU starter Emlyn Knerem (23-5), sophomore right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) laced a double to right center scoring Barski.

The Eagles tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out double by Alyssa Kelley.

Wayne State responded by scoring five runs, all with two outs, in the top of the fifth.  Freshman center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Barski.  Following a ground out, Allen drilled a 3-0 pitch, that was supposed to be ball four of an intentional walk, up the middle but AU second baseman Carrie Hosier made a diving stop to keep the ball in the infield.  Senior shortstop Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter ) hit a laser that bounced to the left field fence on an 0-2 pitch scoring both runners and putting WSU ahead 3-1.  Sophomore third baseman Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) battled until a 3-2 count before smacking a two-run home run over the center field fence.  Sophomore first baseman Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) completed the back-to-back four-baggers with a solo shot over the left field fence.

With a five-run cushion, WSU senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) retired nine of the final 11 Ashland batters for her 42nd win (42-6)of the season.  Hanes tied the WSU career mark with her 72nd victory, in only two seasons.

Foreman scored the game's final run in the sixth.  She reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a pinch-hit single by senior Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's).

WSU out-hit Ashland 9-3, and led in extra-base hits 4-2.

Hanes struck out eight and walked two while allowing three hits and one earned run.  Knerem went 4.2 innings in the circle and surrendered six earned runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeouts.  Logan Hursey pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing one unearned run on a hit with four strikeouts.

15-16, with a site and schedule to be determined. Following the Crossover, five of WSU’s seven remaining matches will be played at the Matthaei, leading into the 2010 GLIAC Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 11.

Wayne State finished its 2009 season with a 19-9 record, the most wins since 1998 and the best winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors have qualified for the GLIAC Tournament each of the last two years under head coach Phil Nickel.

Spring Season Wrap Up

Last weekend, the Warriors participated in a spring tournament at Bowling Green State University.  In the first match, the Warriors took on the host Falcons, splitting the two sets 25-27 and 25-22.  It was an exciting, and spirited match.  In the second match, the opponent was the Bowling Green Alumni team, which had some really good players.  We played well in the first set, winning 25-21.  In set two, the line-up we put on the floor just didn't click, and we struggled to get anything going.

After lunch, we played Wright State, a school I coached at many years ago.  We played well again in set one, winning 25-18.  We lost a little momentum in the middle of set two, but fought back, only to fall short 24-26.  That put us at 3-3 in pool play, and matched us up with Bowling Green again for the final match of the tournament.  We played hard, but it was obvious that we were starting to run out of gas.  We dropped both sets, but it was a great way to finish our spring season.

We were very happy with the our spring season, and are very excited about the 2010 fall season.  The schedule will be released by the end of April.  We look forward to seeing you at some matches this fall.

Spring Season Update

The Warriors took the court Friday and Saturday last weekend.  The weekend kicked off with an alumni match on Friday night.  We had 13 alumni in attendance, whose playing careers ranged from the early nineties to just last year.  We played 3 sets to 25, with our team winning two and the alumni taking the middle set.  It was a fun evening of volleyball, stories, and laughter.

We started our tournament on Saturday against Madonna, a rematch from the previous weekend.  We played better, leading the entire first set until the very end.  We came back the second set strong and finished them off easily for the split.  In our second match, we played Urbana, again earning the split.  In the afternoon, we took care of business against Rochester College and Hope College to finish the day with a 6-2 record.  The important thing for me was to see improvement over the previous weekend, which we did.  While winning and losing is always important, we used multiple line-ups and tried people in different positions.  We want to improve as much as possible individually during the spring, so that we can hit the ground running in the fall and focus on the team.

We finish our spring season this Saturday at Bowling Green, where we will face the host Falcons, Wright State, and a BGSU alumni team.  The tournament starts at 10 AM at BG's Anderson Arena.

Spring Tournament Recap

We played our first spring tournament on Saturday at Madonna University.  It was a small event, with only 4 teams, but I think that was good for our first spring competition.  All of our matches consisted of 2 sets to 25 points.  We started the day playing the University of Windsor.  We played pretty well and won both sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-11.  In the next match, we played Eastern Michigan.  The speed of the game was significantly different from the first match, and it took us a bit to adjust.  We had the 2nd set tied at 20-20, but couldn't keep pace.  In the final match, we played Madonna.  We played well the first set, leading most of the way, but we couldn't hold the lead late.  We will get another shot at Madonna this weekend in our home tournament.

For our first competition, I was pretty pleased.  We competed in all of our matches, and we played pretty good defense.  Our hitting and blocking need to improve, but some of that is to be expected.  We only have 2 outside hitters, one of which was our libero in the fall.  We have 3 middles, but one has missed a significant part of the spring due to injuries.  The other thing was, while this was our first competition, it was EMU and Madonna's third tournament of the spring.  I expect us to be much better this weekend in our home tournament.

Setting The Bar

When I first arrived at Wayne State, the volleyball program had had one winning season since 1998.  Needless to say, the expectations surrounding the program were not very high.  I believe everyone wants to win, but expecting to win is another story.  We have been working on those expectations every day since March 17, 2008.

At Wayne State, I've received a lot of help in setting the bar high for our program by other teams in the athletic department.  And it seems that the bar gets raised every day.  The women's swimming and diving team recently finished 2nd at the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, while the men's swimming and diving team finished 3rd after finishing 2nd a year ago.  The softball team is currently ranked 5th nationally, while men's golf is ranked 23rd, and women's tennis has been ranked in the Top 50.

These programs have set the bar very high for not only the volleyball program at Wayne State, but the entire Warrior athletic program.  With success comes some pressure, but pressure is what makes competitive people rise to the occasion.  In today's society, where competition has been removed from many of the schools, and everyone gets a trophy just for showing up, we welcome the competition and the bar that has been set for us.  We know that competition is what makes us better, what pushes us outside our comfort zones and helps us grow as people, and prepares us for the lives that lie ahead of us.  Thank you Warriors!  We are working hard to return the favor.

Summer Camp Dates

Join us for volleyball camp this summer.  We will offer two camps again this year.

The Intermediate Camp runs from July 26-29th from 9 AM - Noon.  The purpose of this camp is to introduce aspiring volleyball players to the game. This camp will help players learn and improve the fundamental techniques of passing, serving, setting, and attacking.  It is for players entering grades 5-9.

The Advanced Camp runs from July 26-29th from 1 PM - 4 PM.  Designed for second year and older high school girls and players entering college, this camp offers instruction and training in the skills and techniques of passing, setting, attacking, serving and defense, as well as advanced team and tactical training.  This camp is for players entering grades 10-12.

Each camp is $100.  Campers receive a camp t-shirt.  Both camps are held at the Matthaei Building on the campus of Wayne State University.

Warriors Think Pink

As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  This past October, the Wayne State Volleyball team worked to raise money for the Susan G. Komen affiliate at the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit.  In back to back matches on the weekend of October 9-10th, the Warriors wore pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.  The team collected donations on campus the week leading up to the matches, while donations were taken at the matches as well.

This past Saturday, the team presented Jodie Wilson from the Komen Foundation with a check to support breast cancer research during the first intermission of the women's hockey game.  While the amount won't make a huge difference by itself, hopefully it will help the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer.

NCAA Legislation Affects Volleyball

On Saturday, at the annual NCAA Convention, Division II members passed a "Life in the Balance" measure that was put forth by the President's Council.  The package affects all sports at the Division II level, and most importantly impacts volleyball in the following areas:

  • Provide a one-week-later date for the first permissible contest in all fall sports (to the Thursday preceding September 6) and a later reporting date for fall-sports student-athletes (17 days before the first permissible contest in soccer, volleyball, cross country and field hockey, and 21 days before the first permissible contest in football). The proposal also applies to golf and tennis for schools in conferences that conduct their lone league championship or most of its conference matches in the fall.
  • Reduce the number of contests in soccer from 20 to 18 and the number of matches in volleyball from 28 to 26, effective in August 2010.  The reduction in field hockey contests from 20 to 18 will be effective in August 2011.
The association's goal is to give student athletes the ability to have a greater balance between athletics, academics, and their personal lives.  Division II has really been a leader in looking at the welfare of the student-athletes and the time demands put upon them by their respective sports.  As college athletics continues to grow into big business, hopefully the powers that be in Division I will look at the leadership that Division II has provided in these areas and will work to return college athletics to the student-athletes.
