McCulley Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

DETROIT - Wayne State University head volleyball coach Phil Nickel has announced that Kylie McCulley will be joining the program as a graduate assistant coach for the 2011 season.

After lettering four years (2006-09) in volleyball at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, McCulley spent the last year as a volleyball coach at Champaign Central High School before coming to WSU to pursue her postgraduate studies.

"I am thrilled to have Kylie join our family at Wayne State," said Nickel. "It isn’t everyday that we get to add someone to our program that played for one of the top Division I programs in the country, has successful experience as a head coach, and is the kind of person we want as a role model for our players. We often talk about our program improving with the signing of recruits, but today, our program improved with the addition of Kylie McCulley."

McCulley was a starting outside hitter for the Fighting Illini, helping the team to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008 and 2009. She became just the third Illini player since 1996 to join the 20-20 club (over 20 kills and 20 digs in one match) as a junior. McCulley reached the 1,000 career kills mark her senior year during which she ranked 10th in the conference in kills per set (3.14). She was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

A native of Clinton, Ill., and a 2006 graduate of Clinton Community High School, McCulley earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in May.

Weekend Wrap Up

On Saturday, the Warriors traveled to Ann Arbor to participate in the University of Michigan Spring Invitational. While we didn't win a lot of games, it was a great weekend of experience playing against some good teams. We started with Michigan, who is a very good team. It was rough at the beginning but we adjusted and competed much better in the second game, even leading up to 14 or 15. We were still adjusting to the speed as we took on Oakland in our second match. We were competitive in the first game, but should have won the second after leading 24-21. In our third straight match, we played Toledo. In a similar scenario, we were up 17-10 and 24-20 in the first game before eventually losing. We came back to win the second game, before losing the third. At that point, we had played 7 games in a row, and were about out of gas. After a lunch break, we never really got going against Western Michigan, losing in 2 games.

In all, I think it was a good weekend. We learned that we need to be more consistent, but we also learned that we can play with just about anyone when we play our game. We will wrap up our spring season on Saturday, April 16th at home in the Wayne State Spring Tournament. Play begins at 10 AM.

Tourney Recap

On Saturday, the Warriors traveled to Ypsilanti to play in Eastern Michigan's spring tournament. We started in a pool with Madonna, Saginaw Valley State, and Northwood. Pool play consisted of 2 games (I can't call them sets) to 25 or 45 minutes. We started out by beating Madonna 25-22 and 25-17. In the second match, we beat Saginaw Valley State 25-20 and 25-18. In the final match of pool play, we split with Northwood 25-21 and 23-25. We played pretty well in each match, but had a hard time controlling the tempo against Northwood. By winning our pool, we got to play the first place team from Pool A, which was Eastern Michigan. There was definitely a difference in the tempo at which Eastern was playing and the teams we had played in pool play, so it took us most of game 1 to adjust to the speed. We lost 20-25, but as we became acclimated to the tempo, we were able to win game 2 25-22, setting up a 15 point third game. We struggled with serve receive at the beginning, putting ourselves in a 6-0 hole. We fought out of it and got the score to within 2 or 3 points, but couldn't get any closer than that, eventually dropping the set 9-15.

Overall, it was a good weekend for the Warriors. This weekend, we head to Madonna for their spring tournament. Competing for the Warriors this spring is Kate Sak, Cydney Biessel, Madie Kent, Lindsey Graciak, Nicole Arends, Kristen Bulkiewicz, Amanda Wetherill, Jessica DeLeeuw, Jen Finkbeiner, and Kris Vulaj.

Our Favorite Superbowl Commercial

We loved the Volkswagen commercial with the little Darth Vader, and some of the Coke and Doritos commercials were good, but this commercial is #1 on our list.
